The Butterfly

Writer: joannemesserijoannemesseri

We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty. – Maya Angelou

Wow, it has been a while since I’ve posted on my blog. No worries, all is well.

This has been an interesting time to say the least! The Messeri family is now fully vaccinated – whoot, whoot! This has brought about some peace of mind and freedoms, especially for me since I remain immune compromised.

Like many others peeking around the corner of post-pandemic lockdown, I feel like a butterfly. Excited to spread my wings, but cautious I don’t stray too far. At first there was a bit of hesitancy, but now I am comfortable adventuring out. The pandemic is far from over and I feel for the communities and countries that are experiencing deadly infections rates.

It was so exciting to go grocery shopping, to see all the items on the shelves, looking for the sales and chat with the check-out lady. You know, what previously was a routine Saturday morning. I am so thankful for our local grocery store’s online ordering and curbside delivery. I mentioned that to one of the curbside shoppers in the store too!

I also enjoyed scavenging for great deals at my local Salvation Army! I really did miss the tactile sensation you get from feeling different fabrics and the sensation of colors. Yeah, I could just run my hands through the items in my closet, but it is a totally different experience when you find unexpected surprises within the racks.

We just planted our raised-bed vegetable garden, and I am so excited to care for it, and have fresh veggies on our table this summer.

We have three different birds that decided to nest around our house – a dove, robin and finch. And I’m sure the baby bunnies will be showing up in our neighbor's yard soon!

I am very excited that I was able to order a kayak!!! Hoping it arrives next week – then watch out, I will be on the lakes and rivers as much as possible! I wanted one last year, but that was an item that was (and still is) hard to find. I’m glad that so many people have gotten into outdoor activities this past year. It is great to see families out on the trails, hiking and enjoying the wildlife.

After rereading this, I am amazed at how many times I said “excited!” I guess that is my new framework. Excited to be outdoors, excited for increased interactions with people, nature and of course beautiful blue water. This butterfly is now heading outdoors to tend my garden.
