As I sit at my dining room table, windows wide open, breeze rushing in, listening to the birds singing their morning song I reminisce about my recent sisters’ reunion. This quote says it all: "A sister is the greatest gift your parents ever gave you." This baby sister is so thankful for the gift of a lifetime!
I invited my three sisters (that live on the West Coast) to experience the total eclipse with me in Ohio. Little did I know that all three would be up for the adventure. We had a wonderful time being together – not sure the last time it was just “us girls.” And yes, I kicked Steve out of the house for a few days, but he was instrumental as our driver! Lucky for him, no need to separate us due to hair pulling as in our childhood.
It was so good to reconnect during the small moments of sharing coffee in the morning and while traipsing through the museums and parks. I found the bond between sisters is even greater with time. Although apart, the shared memories and upbringing help us click as a whole, a unit that neither space nor time can separate. We embraced this time together as a true gift, and yes the eclipse was amazing too!
I posted many of our adventures on Facebook and a dear friend mentioned how lucky I am to have sisters. Funny, I never really thought about it, but she is spot on. We have each other’s back and in recent years the sister bond has strengthened due to loss and health issues. Being reunited was like coming home – that comfortable rhythm of life experienced together. Magical in a sense. I am so grateful.
When I think of sisters, I also have many “teal” sisters that share my Ovarian cancer diagnosis. May 8th was World Ovarian Cancer Day and I would be remiss if I did not mention these strong, amazing women who have graced my life. Enriching it in oh so many ways. Their friendship, knowledge, bravery and encouragement help me along my journey. Together we are stronger. Ladies you know who you are and I am extremely grateful for you!
Sadly, we have lost quite a few ladies in the past six years, and I would like to honor their memory:
Pat
Diane
Molly
Mary
Candace
Amy
Lynne
Shannon
Barbara
Sarah
Cheri
Heidi
Sandra
Becky
and others who shared of themselves in the face of adversity. All of these ladies have changed me for the better, their bravery and hope remain a lasting memory.
Each time we embrace a memory, we meet again with those we love... for the heart never forgets.
