Life

Writer: joannemesserijoannemesseri

One year ago this week I started my third cycle of chemo treatments.  The pesky cancer came back for the third time and is now stable, thanks to infusions every three weeks.  Hmm, three seems to be the magic number – I sure hope so!

While I was in the midst of treatments last year at MetroHealth, a film crew followed me a round to document my journey after I sent a glowing letter about my doctor and her staff.  Not exactly my best look while in treatment - I did ask if they could edit out my double chin, but no go! They now use the video for training purposes; highlighting compassion, hope and perseverance.  I figure it's about time I share it with you all.

The end of February marks six years of this cancer experience. And this time of year I reflect on the journey, thankful for another year around the sun.  I’ve been in treatment for five of the past six years, I like to say I got one year off for good behavior.  But it is just a part of my story.

The biggest lesson for me has been to focus on what is important in life. Thankful for every day, my wonderful friends and family, and finding ways to embrace joy in my life and imparting joy to others. I've found that giving back, showing kindness, empathy and time in nature is a magical combination for me, bringing me back to center on the goodness of life. Yeah, its not all sunshine and rainbows, there are good and bad days, but joy can be found in the most unusual places if you know how to look for it.

I am enjoying my newest activity – being a baby cuddler at the NICU at MetroHealth.  The babies are so sweet, although sometimes a bit cranky. Their entrance into this world has been a struggle, one that I can't comprehend. They calm as we snuggle, rocking, enjoying the touch and melodic whisper of my voice. Thoroughly being present with them, reciting my calming mantra... May I be filled with loving kindness, May I be well, May I be at peace, at ease with myself, May I be happy.

So glad that I can give back to the community in this way.  It is my hope that it creates a ripple effect:

One of the most beautiful aspects of kindness is its ability to create a ripple effect. When you’re kind to someone, it often inspires them to be kind to others. This simple act of goodwill can set off a chain reaction of positivity that can touch countless lives. The smile you share with a stranger may brighten their day and encourage them to do the same for someone else. It’s a powerful cycle that multiplies the impact of kindness exponentially.
